Tucker Tuesday: Recipe ~ Pizza Sausage Rolls

Occasionally we make sausage rolls for dinner. Not the healthiest of meals traditionally so I've been experimenting with different ingredients and flavours.
These were a hit! Kids wanted them cold in their lunchbox the next day and there were none left to go in the freezer!
I made a huge batch. It used a whole packet of pastry, which is fine by me because pastry doesn't store very well in the freezer once opened I find.

Pizza Sausage Rolls
1kg beef mince
1/3C dehydrated onions or 2 onions, finely chopped
2 carrots, grated
1 small zucchini grated
2 eggs
2C dried breadcrumbs (approx)
1/3C tomato sauce
2T worchestershire sauce
2T dried mixed herbs
1 packet of puff pastry sheets (6 sheets), thawed
21/2C grated cheese
1C pasta sauce or tomato sauce
Milk to brush
Sesame seeds to sprinkle on top (optional but extra nutrition)

Mix the first 9 ingredients in a large bowl with your hands until well mixed. Adjusting the amount of breadcrumbs as needed. You need the mix to be firm, but don't want it too dry.
Allow to 'set' for half hour.

Line a couple of trays with baking paper and preheat oven to 200C.

Lay out a sheet of thawed pastry and cut in half horizontally.
Spoon mince mixture across the middle of one half. Spoon a small amount of past sauce over. I had a small trail about 1cm wide on mine. The sprinkle with a little cheese.
Be careful not to over stuff or you won't be able to close the pastry and they'll burst when cooking.

I found wrapping the rolls up like a cornish pasty worked best. Crimp the edges and then roll them down gives a good seal and they won't burst open as easily.
Cut in half and place on prepared tray.

When ready to bake, use a pastry brush to glaze with a little milk and sprinkle on the sesame seeds if you are using them.

Place in your preheated oven and bake for about half hour or so, until they are golden brown. you may have to turn your tray if you have an oven like mine.

Allow to cool a little before eating. Enjoy!
